Perfecting a skin care routine isn’t always easy, and the scientific ingredients list on the back doesn’t always help. It’s important to know what you are putting on your skin and the best way to do this is by having the ability to decipher an ingredients list.
So here are our handy hacks for decoding almost any cosmetic ingredient list, including natural skin care products:
- READ FROM TOP TO BOTTOM
Ingredients are always listed in order of quantity, with highest quantities at the top of the list. So a product’s claims should always match the quantities.
- UNDERSTAND WHAT WORKS FOR YOUR SKIN
This is a matter of trial and error, but the Cosmetics Safety Database is a useful tool for finding out more on ingredients, their benefits, uses and the way they affect your skin.
- WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT OILS
Skincare oils are popular, but can oxidise quickly. This means that the formula is quite fragile and, if stored incorrectly, it won’t be able to do what it promises. For best results opt for cold pressed oil products, like our Verdure Moisturising Oil – these last longer and are less likely to oxidise in temperature fluctuations.
- BEST BEFORE
Knowing when to get rid of your products is like every other product; fragrance and body care products have expiry dates. To find the expiry date on a product, just look for a picture of a floating jar with its lid off and a number inside. This number tells you the amount of months the product is good for after opening.
- NATURAL VS. HIGH-END
The right combination of simple natural ingredients can be as effective as any high-end and costly product. Like shoes, one size doesn’t fit all and to deal with day to day changes in your skin, save money and reduce clutter and opt for an all year round staple product. These need to be a combination of the right ingredients because each ingredient serves a purpose for texture, absorption, moisture protection, soothing, resorting and hydration.
