Are skin conditions genetic? Why do I have acne or other skin problems? What’s the best skin care routine for me?
These are all questions we ask ourselves and never really know the answer to them. After digging up, we found some tips and tricks that you should know if you’re worried about what your skin could end up like in the future!
The texture and appearance of your skin can be affected by numerous factors, especially the environment, your diet and your skin care routine. However, there’s an underlying factor that can affect what your skin really looks like… your genes.
Genetics plays a huge role in our appearance, including our skin. It is estimated that the human body houses around 20,000- 25,0000 genes which determine how your body digests and processes different nutrients and creates proteins. Many of your genes will work together to affect a single trait, such as the colour of your eyes.
Genes are passed down through family and, if any of your family members suffer from severe skin conditions such as acne or dry skin, you’ll be more prone to get this.
Whilst you’re most likely to get acne in your teen years, you can still get acne in your 30s, 40s and 50s. This is known as ‘adult acne’ and is most common in women going through menopause or during pregnancy.
Problem skin wouldn’t be the only thing you inherit from your parents or grandparents. You could easily inherit fine lines… or super fabulous skin!
Whichever, if you’ve taken care of your skin by scrubbing, cleansing, toning and moisturising – you’ll be preventing any skin issues that you could come to face in the future!
Understanding your beauty DNA is important, and so is knowing how to deal with your skin. If your grandma is 87 and looks 57, then this is a bonus! Her genes could’ve been passed down to you.
TIPS FOR YOUTHFUL SKIN…
- SCRUB, SCRUB AWAY!
You could be cleansing, moisturising and slathering on SPF, but if you’re not exfoliating your skin, all the above becomes redundant. As we begin to age, the process of cell regeneration slows down, which means our body is slower at generating new skin cells and shedding dead skin cells. Scrubbing (often referred to as exfoliation) is the removal of dead cells on the skin’s surface. You’d want to do this at least once a week, as you don’t want to irritate your skin or dry it out!
We’d highly recommend using our Malée Conditioning Scrub. An award-winning scrub that uses a gentle yet effective combination of multi-grain natural salt, in addition to skin-loving oils and sugar with naturally occurring alpha hydroxy acids to draw in moisture, smooth away imperfections and reveal the healthy, youthful and smooth skin beneath.

- THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP FOR YOUTHFUL SKIN AND TO AVOID ANY MISHAPS IS… CLEANSING!
Cleansing will remove any build up you may have, it’s perfect for the removal of dirt, oil and other unwanted debris. Your face is continually covered in all kinds of bacteria, pollutants, viruses, dirt and dead skin cells. By cleansing daily, you’re washing away these impurities. Cleansing post exfoliating will also be second tier to clearing away the dead skin cells.
- YOU’VE GOT TO TONE IT DOWN
Toning your skin is one of the most vital parts of cleaning your skin, a good toner will remove any remaining oils, dirt and debris left behind by your cleanser. Above all, toning will help soothe, nourish and hydrate the skin while restoring its delicate pH balance.
- MOISTURISE!
Moisturising is one of the most important things you need to do, every day. Most of all, it’s crucial for healthy skin. The important times to moisturise are after a bath, shave or exfoliation. For some, this may be twice a day! Moisturising after a shower is incredibly important as hot water strips all the moisture and oils out of your skin, leaving it parched and dry. We highly recommend using a moisturiser that’ll provide you with everything you need: essential oils, vitamins and more!

- PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM THE SUN!
One of the most important things to do whilst protecting your skin is ensuring that it is being protected from the sun, no matter what. Sun screen will shield your skin from serious skin issues such as skin cancer and premature ageing. Find a sunscreen that has UV protection and UVB, an SPF of 30 or higher, and is completely water resistant!
